What is barrel racing?

Barrel racing tests the speed and agility of a horse and rider in a cloverleaf pattern around three identical barrels:

  • The clock is started electronically as the horse crosses the starting line at full speed.
  • The rider may chose to maneuver around the cloverleaf toward the right or the left.
  • The clock stops when the pattern is complete and the horse crosses the finish line.

A five-second penalty is given for touching a barrel, even if it is being done to keep from falling. A contestant is disqualified for crossing the finish line without completing the standard cloverleaf pattern.  (Excerpt by Brenda Ruggiero).

Cowboys and Cowgirls Open Barrel Racing Association (CCOBRA) is a Marana/Tucson, AZ club that has been hosting barrel racing events for more than 20 years.  CCOBRA is a 4D barrel racing association that gives runners of all abilities an opportunity to win prize money as well as year-end awards.
